Zen Garden, AI moving-image installation by Ronen Tanchum

Zen Garden

Immersive Installation OpenAI Residency 2025

Zen Garden is an AI video installation developed during Ronen Tanchum's OpenAI residency. The work imagines a post-natural garden where robotic caretaking, generated landscape logic, and meditative visual structure unfold within the same synthetic environment.

The piece moves between tranquility and distortion. It borrows the cultural language of gardens, maintenance, and contemplation, then rebuilds those ideas through machine learning, image simulation, and impossible spatial continuity.

Within the studio's broader practice, Zen Garden is a study in AI as environment-making. It uses generative video not only to depict a landscape, but to question what serenity, ritual, and nature become when they are computed rather than found.

Zen Garden reinterprets the classical Japanese garden as a digitally mediated ecosystem. Developed during Ronen Tanchum’s OpenAI residency using the Sora model, the work stages robotic gardeners in relation to synthetic landscapes.

The installation treats the garden as a liminal site: controlled and wild, intimate and abstract. Care becomes choreography, and machine logic enters a ritual space shaped by contemplation, cultivation, and atmospheric fiction.

The work combines generated moving image with spatial installation logic.

  • AI-generated landscape sequences developed with the Sora model
  • Generative robotics and staged environmental behavior
  • Adaptable to projection, screen-based, and immersive exhibition formats
